Natural Science - Energy

Hello Everyone!!

I hope you are all well and not getting too bored staying at home. Hopefully it won't be too much longer we have to stay inside. It is not very nice weather in Scotland this week so I am missing being in sunny Spain!

This week we are going to learn about ENERGY! We'll look at different types of energy, focusing mainly on renewable and non-renewable energy. Do you already know the names of any different types of energy in English?

Watch the following video to learn about different types of energy. Listen carefully to Dr Binocs and answer the questions below.

Now that you have watched the video, see if you can answer these questions:

Answers to the questions:
1. The ability to do work
2. The body breaks down the food to give you energy
3. In the forms of heat and light
4. Electrical energy
5. Kinetic and potential energy
6. The energy that is in motion
7. The energy stored inside an object
8. Energy can neither be destroyed nor created, but it can transform from one form of energy to another
9. Mechanical energy
10.Various chemical reactions
11. Motion caused by gravity
12. When an object falls to the ground because of the Earth’s gravitational pull

Now we are going to focus on renewable and non-renewable energy. As you are looking through this PowerPoint pay attention to the words in bold. Write these words in your notebook and find the Spanish translation. There are 10 questions at the end of this PowerPoint so pay attention as you are reading it. Remember to answer in full sentences.

Answers to questions:
1. Renewable energy comes from natural resources that are naturally replenished, such as sunlight, wind and waves
2. Non-renewable energy comes from natural resources that are not naturally replenished, such as oil and coal.
3. Lights, televisions and computers
4. Solar panels are used to convert sunlight into electricity
5. Electricity
6. Geothermal energy is thermal energy generated and stored in the Earth.
7. True
8. Burning coal is bad for the environment because lots of carbon dioxide gets released into the atmosphere.
9. It is used to make electricity and also fuel which we use in our cars.
10. It is found deep underground and we use it to heat our water.

Using the PowerPoint to help you, complete this activity by sorting out the different sources into the correct form of energy - renewable or non-renewable.

Listen to this fun song to revise all that you have learnt about energy today!

Have a good week everyone!
